Gender specific Knees
Women are an important group to consider in the treatment of
knee osteoarthritis. Approximately 55% of knee
replacements performed in Australia are performed on women.
Academic studies have also shown that osteoarthritis of the
knee is more prevalent in women than in men.
Despite the larger number of women suffering from osteoarthritis
of the knee, for decades implants were developed based on knee
models that did not look at the differences between men and
women.
Since 2002 ASDM has focused on knees for women, or gender knees
expanding the range of sizes available to address gender knee
differences.
